“See, this alone I found: God made man upright, but they have sought out many interventions (chishbonot).” — Ecclesiastes 7:29
In Hebrew, the word used here is חִשְׁבּוֹנוֹת (ḥishbonot), which comes from the root ḥ-sh-b (חשׁב) meaning “to think, calculate, or devise.” The word is usually translated as schemes, devices, contrivances, or inventions.
Transliteration Variations
One challenge with Hebrew words is that there is no single “official” way to bring them into English letters. Different traditions use different spellings:
- Cheshbonot — the most common in academic or Jewish study circles.
- Chishbonot — a phonetic spelling that reflects how many English speakers naturally pronounce it.
- Heshbonot — another simplified version, dropping the “c.”
All three are acceptable transliterations. You’ll even see variation with other Hebrew words:

Why I Chose Chishbonot
I use the spelling Chishbonot for three reasons:
- Clarity for English Readers — Most people reading in English will instinctively pronounce “chi” as in chip, which is close to the Hebrew sound.
- Consistency — This is the spelling I used for the book title and the domain name (chishbonot.com). Keeping it consistent avoids confusion.
- Legitimacy — Biblical transliterations vary, and this spelling is within the bounds of recognized usage.
